RedMi Note 5 ~ Pre-Launch Rant and Leaks Overview

RedMi Note 5 Pre-Launch Rant and Leaks Overview

For some reason, there is a substantial amount of teasing and speculation that arises on the internet prior to the launch of devices from the top manufacturers. Xiaomi, of course, being one of them is prey to this too and like other smartphone manufacturers, Xiaomi generally gets hyped about a lot. In recent times there was so much noise about RedMi Note 5 pre-launch rant and leaks.

The reason for this is simple, Xiaomi makes good smartphones. And not just smartphones, Xiaomi makes a whole bunch of other stuff but that doesn’t get the attention of the media as much as their smartphones.  Now for those of who know Xiaomi also know that they are upgrading their entire line-up of devices for the year 2018.

RedMi Note 5 ~ Pre-Launch Rant and Leaks

And that brings us to the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5. It is one of the most hyped about the device in recent times and for good reason. It will replace the very successful Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 which was a runaway hit on the Indian shores. And the reason was simple, it brought some much-needed flagship features at a price we all could access. So after a slew of teases and leaks, we finally have some Redmi 5 device leaks with us and it looks promising.

Design and Display of the Leaked RedMi Note 5

Xiaomi will have a tough time differentiating the Note 5 from the Redmi 5 Plus. Both are supposed to sport the same 18:9 form factor and both are supposed to have the 5.99-inch display. More interestingly, the performance bridge between them will also be quite narrow but more on that later. The leaked design shows the Note 5 to have the rear design similar to the Redmi 4, albeit with dual camera inserts. The front, however, seems to be radically different as there very thin bezels surrounding the device although I suspect that it won’t be the final design as it looks very unrefined overall.

Moving on to the display, all current leaks point to the Redmi Note 5 having a 5.99-inch display like the Redmi 5. Also, the display will feature the same 1080×2160 resolution and also have a similar IPS-LCD panel as per reports and speculations.

Hardware Leaks of RedMi Note 5

Now, this is where things get interesting, the Note 5 could come in either of the two SoC’s namely the Snapdragon 630 or the more powerful Snapdragon 660. While there is a high possibility that the later won’t actually make it into production but nonetheless, it is confirmed that it is going to be either of these two. It’ll also have 3/4GB of RAM like the Xiaomi Note 4.

Speaking of raw performance, the Snapdragon 630 is a revised version of the Snapdragon 625 and apart from minor changes in performance brings very little to the table. The Snapdragon 660 on the other is a total beast. The 660 is based on Qualcomm’s very own Krait cores that are used in the Snapdragon 835. Rest assured, either of the two SoC’s will be very good daily drivers for the Note 5.

The Note 5 will probably go on sale with Android Oreo right out of the box since it is pegged for launch sometime in January. It is also worth noting that since it is a Xiaomi only device, it’ll run MiUi out of the box, probably upgraded to take advantage of the OS. Now MiUi is a very near UI in its own regard and doesn’t lag or slow down the device. But if I had to make a request to Xiaomi then it would be that they should stick to stock android like the Mi A1. Also since it’ll possibly have dual cameras, we might get to see a few changes in the camera app.

Camera and Storage

The biggest change that the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 will get is in terms of the cameras. In a first for the Redmi series, the device with come with dual cameras like the Mi A1 or it’s more expensive models. The dual cameras will possibly have a resolution of 12MP reach like the Mi A1 accompanied by a single LED flash.

It is still too early to draw a conclusion about how the cameras will be but nonetheless the camera in the Note 4 was pretty average. So I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt and say that it’ll be at least better than the previous camera.

Also, dual cameras will bring the Bokeh effect in a budget much like the Honor 6x and Lenovo K8 Note. Likewise, the front will have a 5MP camera for taking selfies and video calls. Presumably, it’ll be the same 5MP camera that Xiaomi has been using in the Redmi 4.

On the storage front, there will be two variants- one with 3GB/32GB and one with 4GB/64GB like the previous Note device. It’ll also presumably keep it in tradition and have a hybrid sim tray for expanding the storage.

Battery and Connectivity

Now, this is one area where we might see a bump in capacity but it cannot be confirmed. Reports indicate that will have a 5000mAh battery. If not then Xiaomi might stick to the 4000mAh unit like in the previous Note 4.

Connectivity wise, Xiaomi has never really skimped so the device will have all the latest assortments like Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth v4.2, GPS with A-GPS, GLONASS and BDS and lastly an IR blaster. While all of this is fine, the inclusion of an NFC chip will definitely help a lot but don’t get your hopes up too high yet.

Summing up then, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 will be in a tricky position when it launches, having not much to differentiate itself from the slightly cheaper Redmi 5 Plus (top variant) in terms of specifications. Also with the Redmi 5 Plus on the block, the Note 5 will instantly lose the one thing that its character was built on and that is the phablet nature of the device.

So unless Xiaomi gives it an even bigger display and an even more powerful SoC, it’ll be hard to justify buying it as compared to the Redmi 5 Plus. Speaking of which the Redmi Note 5 plus price in India is expected to be around Rs.12999, which is similar to the previous mode RedMi Note 4l.
